Herculiner® on the Floor: 1998 Jeep TJ (skill level 3)
By Jeff Keegan
Here's another really easy (but time consuming) modification for your truck that can help prevent floor rust and extend the life of your truck. It also makes post mud bog cleanup a lot easier. I did this modification over four days. It probably took 10 hours total.
Tools:
- Assorted Wrenches
- Acetone (for cleanup and thinning)
- Two Inch Disposable Paint Brush
- Rubber Gloves
- Masking Tape
- Grease Cutter Detergant
- Vacuum Cleaner with Brush Attachment
- Rags
- Paint Roller Pan with Disposable Liners
- Drill with Paint Mixing Bit
- Herciliner 1 Gallon Bedliner Kit
1. Rip out and dispose of the carpet.
2. Remove seats and all seat mounting hardware. Also remove drain plugs.
3. Remove center console or use the masking tape to mask it.
4. Thoroughly vacume the floor and get off all dried mud with water and a washcloth. Let it dry and vacume again.
5. Scuff all surfaces where the bedliner will be applied with the provided scouring pad. Scuff until there is no shine left anywhere. Use a dry towel to wipe paint dust away so you can see of you've scuffed enough.
6. Vacume the floor again.
7. Clean all surfaces with acetone. Then let it dry for at least 1 hour.
8. Carefully mask all edges where you do not want herculiner to go. Take your time masking and really press the tape down well. The more time you spend on this step, the better your truck will look. Also, roll the tape up with your fingers and stick the rolls into any holes you do not want filled with rubber. This is important because if you don't, you won't be able to get the seats remounted.
9. Mix up the herculiner and pour some into the roller pan.
10. Roll one coat of herculiner onto the floor of your jeep. Use the paint brush to apply material to areas not accessable by the roller which is provided.
11. Put paint brush into a cup of acetone. Dispose of roller. Let the first coat dry for about 4 hours.
12. Apply a second coat using the second roller provided and the paintbrush.
13. Remove all masking tape before you let the herculiner dry. Otherwise, you'll have a lot of trouble removing it.
14. Let the herculiner dry for about 36 hours before remounting the seats.
15. When remounting the seats, if the bolts are difficult to screw in, you probably have some herculiner in the hole. DO NOT FORCE THE BOLTS! There are nuts underneath the floor that are only spot welded. If you force them you will break the spot welds. This happened to me. I had to dremel the bolt off, go to the store to get a new one, then crawl underneath the truck and hold a new nut with pliers while carolynn screwed in the bolt from the cab. Very annoying.
16. Enjoy a very long period of rust free floor panels and easy post mud bog cleanup.
